What is Sonshine?
Sonshine is an outreach of First Christian Church that is dedicated to sharing the love of Jesus Christ by loaning medical and mobility equipment at absolutely no cost to residents of Washington County who are recovering from illness or injury or are attempting to cope with chronic illness or mobility issues at home. Sonshine is serving a growing need due to decreasing coverage of medical equipment by private insurance carriers and cost cutting changes in Medicare and other federal and state assistance programs.
Sonshine loans items such as hospital beds, bed rails, over-bed tables, and patient lifts; mobility equipment including wheelchairs, rollators, knee walkers, standard walkers, crutches and canes; bathroom equipment including portable commodes, transfer benches, tub/shower seats, and a variety of safety rails. In addition, Sonshine also provides items such as slings, braces and a variety of immobilizers for various parts of the body.
Sonshine began operations in November of 2011 with thirteen pieces of newly purchased medical equipment, and has seen its loanable inventory grow to nearly four-hundred items, nearly all of which are in excellent, like-new or new condition. This has been the result of generous equipment donations or equipment newly purchased through generous financial donations, grants, and memorials. All donated funds are dedicated entirely to the purchase, maintenance and repair of Sonshine’s loanable equipment inventory. To date, Sonshine has loaned over three-hundred items, about thirty-five percent of which were outside the Washington community, in towns and rural residences within Washington County.
The operations of Sonshine are carried out by unpaid volunteers including sixteen transaction volunteers who process loans, returns and donation transactions, volunteers who maintain and repair equipment and Executive Director, Ron Flora, who is responsible for management of Sonshine’s day-to-day operations.
If you need to borrow, return equipment, or would like to make a financial donation or donate equipment donation that is in excellent to like-new condition, simply call Sonshine at 319-591-1333 and we will arrange to have a volunteer meet you at the Sonshine office located at 211 South Iowa Avenue. Again, there is ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE for borrowing needed home-care medical or mobility equipment from Sonshine.
